Who is the true Father of America?
The quick answer is obvious. George Washington: General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army; our first President; the tall dignified man of great courage, determination and leadership beyond comprehension.
Yet there are others. Thomas Jefferson: eloquent and masterful author of the Declaration of Independence; our third President; the Virginia planter, whose vision for America extended far beyond the bounds of thirteen colonies, including the Louisiana territory and undiscovered lands and waterways to the Pacific ocean.
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, and other early explorers and pioneers deserve credit for their bravery and tenacity in securing the future of new American lands.
Before all of these were the men and women of Massachusetts who faced tyranny and invasion by the British, fought at Bunker Hill, and stood their ground while the Continental Congress refused to lend support. Where would we be without their daring resourcefulness? We must add Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and our second President John Adams to the list of fathers, among so many others.
But there is only one true Father to us all and He is God. God is the Father of all, American or not. Can we also claim God as America’s Father? I believe we can and should. God, the Divine Creator, dwelt in the hearts and minds of our country’s earliest leaders as they dreamed, planned, fought, wrote, lead, met, debated, and ultimately won America’s independence.
God is the true Father of America.
Do I, author of American Waypoints, speak of religion in this regard? I do not. I doubt that God is a big fan of religion. I trust it was He that persuaded the hearts and minds of our Constitution’s crafters to separate Church from State. Both institutions are messy at best and neither should influence the other. But God gave us life and liberty to choose our religion, to speak freely, to cast our votes, and ultimately to give Him our praise and glory. He is our true Father.
God Bless and Protect the United States of America on this Fourth of July.
